Alexa Koon, PMHNP-BC

Alexa Koon was raised in Upstate New York and completed her first undergraduate degree at SUNY Cortland. She earned her initial Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology while playing on the collegiate field hockey team there. Immediately after graduating from SUNY Cortland she decided she was not done learning and she enrolled in nursing school. She graduated with her second Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Utica College in Utica, New York in 2018.

After completing her nursing degree she moved south to Nashville where she worked as a critical care nurse in one of the inner city hospitals. After a couple years there she began her career as a travel nurse and traveled the country during the COVID-19 pandemic working in critical care units from Colorado all the way down to Florida.

Alexa had always had a passion for neuroscience and a fascination with the human mind. Her career in bedside nursing had really heightened this fascination after she realized so many patients in the critical units across the country all shared one thing in common: they had all suffered from some sort of mental health condition that contributed to their disease state- whether it be depression, addiction, anxiety, you name it! She realized there is a real mental health epidemic in this country and she wanted to help! It was at that time she moved to Alabama with her husband and began her career as a psychiatric nurse at East Alabama Medical Center where she worked while she was earning her degree as a nurse practitioner. In 2022 she graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with her Master’s Degree as a Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.

Alexa started her career as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner here at Preferred Medical Group in 2022 and is excited to have the opportunity to treat both children and adults in the area!

In her free time, Alexa enjoys spending time with her husband, their baby boy, and their 2 dogs. When they are not at the Crossfit gym they are looking for new places to travel to, new music to listen to, and new mountains to climb!
