Do I have ADHD?

Child holding chair above head while other children are sitting stillAttention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is an extremely common mental health disorder that can cause issues with attention, concentration, focus, memory, restlessness, and much more.

Did you always get in trouble in class for talking out and not sitting still? Do you interrupt conversation frequently because you’re afraid you’ll forget what you were going to say if you don’t? Do you constantly need to be moving, tapping your foot, or fidgeting with your hand? Do you make frequent careless mistakes? Do you lose things all the time?

If you can relate to some or all of these, it could be possible that you have ADHD. Make an appointment with one of our mental health professionals to be evaluated today!

Can ADHD be cured?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. Although there is technically no “cure” for ADHD, there are many medications that can help to manage symptoms to a degree that can very positively improve the individual's life.

In fact, ADHD is one of the most studied psychiatric conditions and has some of the most abundant research regarding the positive impact of medication on the disease. There are many medications used to treat ADHD, targeting the core symptoms of the disease: attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

With the combination of medications and behavioral or lifestyle interventions, ADHD symptoms can be managed very well enabling the individual to experience little to no negative impacts of the disease in their day to day lives. If you are interested in learning more about how ADHD may be affecting you, reach out to schedule an appointment with one of our mental health professionals today.

How do we diagnose ADHD in Adults?

Diagnosing Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in adults can be tricky. We start off by doing a full psychiatric interview. This includes a detailed history, including your past and current symptoms, family history, and details about your social life. By doing this we are able to tease out symptoms that may be caused by ADHD or other mental health disorders. Several other mental health disorders like anxiety can mimic symptoms of ADHD.

After the initial evaluation you will likely be given some questionnaires to fill out, helping your provider get more information on the symptoms you are having. If ADHD is still suspected after doing all of this, you will likely be asked to come in to do a computerized test for ADHD. At Preferred Medical Group we do what is called a QB test. This test measures the three hallmark symptoms of ADHD: hyperactivity, impulsivity, and attention. After the test is administered the provider will review the information up to that point and discuss a diagnosis with you.
