A sinus lift (sinus augmentation or sinus elevation), is a bone augmentation procedure for patients who have the insufficient natural bone in this area for placement of dental implants. The procedure involves adding a bone graft and/or platelet rich plasma or platelet rich fibrin below the sinus so that dental implants can be placed. Types of sinus lift before dental implants:
Sinus lift can be done directly or indirectly.
Direct sinus lift:
This is also called lateral window sinus lift. A window is cut into the bone of the outer wall of the sinus. The sinus membrane is elevated and a bone graft is packed. Direct sinus lift is indicated when there severe bone resorption at the sinus floor that does not allow placement of dental implants.
Indirect sinus lift:
This is also called crestal sinus lift. This procedure is far less invasive than the direct sinus lift. The sinus in entered through the ridge or through an extraction socket. A bone graft is then placed through the socket.
Ridge Expansion
If the jaw ridge isn’t wide enough to support dental implants, the bone ridge is expanded so that a bone graft and platelet rich plasma can be added. Ridge expansion is an excellent way to place dental implants in areas of thin bone and to avoid more invasive procedures requiring extensive bone grafting.
