How Your Podiatrist Can Help with Your Foot Pain

Your podiatrist can address all types and causes of foot pain to help you recover quickly.

Our feet take a lot of abuse day in and day out, so you probably aren’t too surprised when a day spent in dress shoes leaves you massaging your achy feet at night. While you may be able to pinpoint the culprit of your minor foot pain or treat these common issues on your own, it’s also important to recognize when it’s time to turn to an expert such as our Fort Worth, TX, podiatrists Dr. Steven Lund and Dr. Leslie Rousseau for treatment and care.

It may be time to see a professional If,

  • You are dealing with severe heel pain or heel pain that doesn’t respond to at-home care
  • You have a painful lump or growth on the foot that is getting bigger
  • You have pain and other problems due to flat feet
  • You notice foot pain when your feet are elevated or while sleeping (signs of peripheral artery disease or blood flow problems)
  • You experience pain and swelling in just one foot (could be a sign of a fracture, tendon rupture or tendonitis)
  • Your foot pain gets worse with activity and you have limited mobility as a result
  • You have severe foot pain that lasts more than 24 hours

The cause of your foot pain will determine how our Fort Worth, TX, podiatrists handle your situation. Minor foot problems usually respond to rest and home care. For example, sprains and strains usually respond best to the RICE method: rest, ice, compression and elevation. Make sure to stretch your feet every day and perform certain resistance exercises to help rebuild and strengthen the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the feet. Your podiatrist can show you different exercises that can improve common causes of foot pain including,

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Arthritis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Flat feet

Those with faulty foot biomechanics may not even realize that their hip, leg or back problems stem from issues with how they walk. Everything from poor posture and bad habits can affect how your gait, putting too much pressure on certain areas of the foot and leading to foot pain and other issues.

The good news is that your podiatrist can create custom orthotics, or shoe inserts, which can provide additional support and cushioning to your feet while standing, walking or running.  We can also recommend special shoes that can provide the type of support you need for your feet (this can be particularly beneficial for those with diabetes or arthritis in their feet).
