Treating Your Bunions

Are you looking for simple solutions for tackling your bunion symptoms?

Living with bunion pain? If so, our Fort Worth, TX, podiatrists Dr. Leslie Rousseau and Dr. Steven Lund can help you get your bunions under control. It’s important that you maintain good foot hygiene to prevent your bunion from getting worse. The good news is that most people can manage their bunion symptoms with simple at-home care including,

Choose Wide Shoes

Narrow shoes are going to put a lot of pressure on that misaligned joint, which can cause pain and also make your bunion worse over time. Instead, you should look for shoes that have a wide enough toe box that they won’t cause friction or irritation to the bunion.

Nix High Heels

We know that high heels may look cool, but they aren’t going to be cool for your bunions. In fact, high heels are only going to put the toes further into the front of the shoe, which can put more pressure on the bunion. Instead, opt for shoes with a heel at or below two inches tall. Along with high heels, you should also avoid shoes with a pointed toe.

Get Custom Orthotics

One of the best ways to ease your bunion and to provide additional support to your feet is by getting custom or prescription orthotics (aka: shoe inserts) from your foot doctor. Remember that over-the-counter orthotics aren’t tailored to your foot and its specific needs, but our podiatry team can create custom-fitted shoe inserts made just for you.

Try a Bunion Splint

While a bunion splint will not correct a misaligned toe joint it can hold the joint in the proper alignment to reduce pain, stiffness and inflammation, especially first thing in the morning. Many people have found bunion splints to provide relief for their bunion symptoms, and they can easily be purchased online or at your local drugstore.
