What To Do When You Have An Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenails can be a painful and persistent problem for many. Even a minor inflammation or infection can cause considerable toe and foot issues. Fortunately, if you have an ingrown toenail and you’re in the Fort Worth, TX or Denton, TX areas, Dr. Stephen Lund and Dr. Leslie Rousseau of Metroplex Foot and Ankle Center are available to see you.

Although some conditions can become serious, some only require minor treatments, sometimes even from the comfort of your home.
Let them examine and treat your ingrown toenails, as well as numerous other podiatry-related issues.

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Ingrown toenails can be caused by many different conditions or actions. Anything, from a stubbed toe, to an improperly trimmed toenail can cause swelling, inflammation, or an infection. In essence, the toenail is digging into the skin around itself, as it grows. Left untreated, a patient will feel discomfort, pressure, and warmth, and the skin will appear red or possibly yellowish-green if infected.

Treating the Toe

An ingrown toenail for some may only be mildly irritating. A warm foot bath with epsom salt may reduce inflammation and manage the discomfort. Some patients find that regular soaking can manage their toe problems.

If the toe is warm to the touch or shows redness or signs of pus from infection, you should seek the advice and care of a qualified podiatrist. More than likely, you’re nursing an ingrown toenail which will need physician’s care.

Without a proper examination and diagnosis, an ingrown toenail can turn into a bigger problem, such as an infection that spreads to surrounding tissue or into the bone. The good news; an ingrown toenail is a fairly common and treatable condition.

The Metroplex Foot & Ankle Center, with offices in Alliance/ Fort Worth /North Hills, TX, and Denton, TX, specializes in ingrown toenail cases, as well as other podiatry-related treatments. For most patients, an ingrown toenail procedure is handled in-office. The patient can be home and feel relief within the same day.
