Treating Your Bunions

If you have a bunion, you can get relief at Metroplex Foot and Ankle Center in Fort Worth, TX. Dr. Steven Lund and Dr. Leslie Rousseau specialize in the treatment of foot and ankle conditions. With three offices; Fort Worth, North Richland Hills, and Denton, one is sure to be convenient.

Bunions are bone growths at the base of the big toe on the interior of the foot. They are usually the result of a hereditary foot type. Certain structural defects in your feet lead to the condition. You can have them on one foot or both feet. For some people, they just exist and, while unsightly, they are not painful. Making an appointment with your podiatrist can give you peace of mind and set you on the road to recovery.

Treating Bunions at Home

For a bunion, your podiatrist will start with the most conservative treatments. Since one of the main causes of painful bunions (shoes don't cause bunions, they just irritate them) is shoes that are too tight at the toe box and put pressure on your big toe, the first thing to do is to start wearing toes that have more room. You may have to go to a wide width or even extra wide. The relief should be pretty immediate. But depending on how far gone the bunion is, this may not be enough.

You can take OTC pain medication to alleviate the inflammation, but you don't want to have to take it every day forever. You can get pads that protect the bunion from rubbing on your shoe and your podiatrist may recommend custom orthotics. Steroid shots may help with the pain in the joint, but if all else fails, surgery is the last resort.

Bunion Surgery

If your bunion is disrupting your life, it is time to consider bunion surgery. Your podiatrist will take x-rays to see the extent of the damage and discuss which type of surgery is best for your particular feet. Most bunion surgery is done under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia may be required. Your podiatrist will discuss the different options with you and explain the reasons for the type of surgery being suggested. Recovery will depend on the type of surgery that is used.
