Seeking Help for Your Bunions

When you meet with Dr. Steven Lund and Dr. Leslie Rousseau of Metroplex Foot & Ankle Center, they will diagnose and treat your bunion distress in Denton & Fort Worth, TX.

Changes in Shoewear

Knowing what changes in shoewear can help relieve the discomfort is essential. The first step is avoiding shoes that put pressure on the afflicted area. These include shoes with pointed toes, high heels, and narrow-toe boxes. It's also recommended to buy shoes wide enough for your foot.

The second step is utilizing special orthotic devices to help support your foot. They can relieve pressure and control your alignment issues.

Padding

There are several ways to reduce the symptoms of bunions. One way is to get a pair of well-fitting shoes. Another is to use pads or splints. Padding for your bunions can be found at pharmacies or local drug stores. They are designed to cushion the affected area and help stop it from rubbing against the shoe.

Some come in different sizes, so you should test one out for a while before committing to a purchase to relieve bunion discomfort.

Medications

Your doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory drugs or other medications to help you manage your pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can reduce inflammation and help control your pain.

Injection Therapy

If you suffer from bunions, you may be considering injection therapy. One treatment is to use corticosteroids, which are injected into the bunions. Cortisone shots are safe and effective. Another option is Prolotherapy, which uses anesthetic and dextrose to stimulate the growth of new connective tissues.

Orthotic Devices

If you are looking for a non-surgical solution to treat your bunions, orthotic devices can be a great option. These devices can help realign your big toe joint and reduce pain and pressure. Orthotic devices are usually made of flexible materials that relieve pressure on the toes.

Surgery

Once the diagnosis is determined, our providers may suggest surgery. Surgery is only necessary when pain interferes with the patient's day-to-day activities. The length of surgery will depend on the amount of malalignment of the foot.
