Dental Implants | Best Option for Replacing Missing Teeth?

Dentistry has come a long way over the past 10 years, and now more than ever people are choosing to have dental implants to fill a gap in their smile. Studies have shown time and time again that dental implants are very reliable tooth replacements. The 10 year success rate for a dental implant is greater than 94%, whereas a conventional bridge averages only about 60%. This is because fixed bridges rely on the adjacent teeth for support and require more diligent maintenance by the patient. When a bridge fails, it is often due to tooth decay on one or both supporting teeth to the extent that they may require root canal treatment or removal. On the other hand, a dental implant mimics the root of a tooth and is not dependent on adjacent teeth. It is easier to maintain and because it is made of titanium, it cannot develop cavities.

Another replacement option, which does not measure up to implants, is a removable partial denture, otherwise known as a ‘flipper’. These are quick and inexpensive acrylic plates that fill the gap of the missing tooth but are cumbersome, not as stable, and are uncomfortable since they may cover the roof of the mouth or span multiple teeth for retention.

Finally, not replacing a missing tooth is also a treatment option. However, where there is a lack of stimulus for the bone, such as in an area missing a tooth, the bone will shrink and collapse over time leaving a defect in the jaw. Teeth may shift into the space and chewing may become more challenging and less effective.
