Reasons You May Need a Root Canal

When the interior of a tooth and its root are severely infected or damaged, extraction is sometimes necessary. However, there is an option that can spare the tooth. Root canal therapy is a procedure for restoring a tooth and preventing extraction by removing diseased or damaged tissue inside the tooth and root. Dr. Jeffrey Taylor, our experienced dentist at Decatur Family Dentistry in Indianapolis, can determine if a root canal could save your tooth.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a procedure that can strengthen and restore a diseased or damaged tooth so extraction can be avoided. A root canal is needed when the soft pulp tissue in the center of the tooth is either infected or damaged due to injury. In the case of infection, it can spread down through the canals of the tooth root. As the infection spreads, an abscess can form. Abscesses can be extremely painful.

A root canal is performed to remove all damaged or diseased tissue from inside the tooth and canals of the root. Once the affected tissue has been removed, the interior of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. In some cases, the canals might need to be reshaped. Finally, the canals and tooth interior are filled and sealed. A dental crown is usually placed over the tooth to make the tooth stronger and prevent further infection or damage.

Signs a Root Canal is Needed

There are many reasons for getting a root canal. The procedure can preserve an infected or a damaged tooth so extraction is not needed. Additionally, the tooth will be strengthened and restored so it can resume normal chewing and biting functions free of pain, sensitivity, or discomfort. Another reason for having a root canal is to stop the spread of infection to other areas, such as the surrounding teeth or gums.

You may need a root canal from our Indianapolis office if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Development of an abscess
  • A toothache that is persistent or severe
  • Darkening or discoloration of the affected tooth
  • Gum swelling and tenderness near the affected tooth
  • Continued tooth sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks
  • Sensitivity, pain, or discomfort when chewing or biting food
