Recovering From a Root Canal

A root canal surgery is used to remove dead nerves and debris from the inside of a damaged tooth. It is a very common dental procedure, but it is also one of the most extensive types of oral surgery done today. If you have recently received a root canal, you know it is not a significantly painful procedure.

It is after the surgery, however, where you must be most careful not to hit a bump while on the road to recovery. Recovering from a root canal can be summed up in three easy steps: watch what you eat, manage your pain, and continue your care. If you are in need of a root canal or want more advice on root canal recovery, call Dr. Jeffrey Taylor at Decatur Family Dentistry in Indianapolis, IN.

  1. Watch What You Eat
Immediately after your root canal surgery your mouth will most likely be numb from the anesthesia used. During this time you should not eat anything too hot as you could burn your mouth. Your teeth may also be sensitive to very cold liquids. It is best to have food prepared at home that is easy to consume so you can eat safely over the next couple of days. Now is the time to start making soups and smoothies that will satisfy you and allow you to recover.

  2. Manage Your Pain
Chances are you will be sore for a while after the surgery. Your Indianapolis dentist, Dr. Taylor, might suggest that you take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen to reduce the pain. It is also important to remember not to brush so hard or use excessive biting force when eating. Overstimulating your recovering mouth could cause serious damage and lengthen the recovery process.

  3. Continued Care
Continued care after a root canal surgery is all about creating healthy routines that accommodate your recovering mouth. Get into the habit of biting on the opposite side of your mouth. Brush your teeth and floss more gently. Let your dentist know if you are experiencing any serious discomfort. And as always, visit your dentist at Decatur Family Dental at least twice a year.
