5 Tips for a Healthier Smile

Here are some simple habits to adopt right now for a healthier smile.

Your smile is one of the most important and most noticeable features we have, so it’s important that we are properly taking care of it to keep teeth and gums looking and feeling their best. While we know that you won’t see changes overnight, do know that any improvements you make to your general oral care routine will greatly impact your smile in the long run. Along with visiting our Kalamazoo, MI, dentist Dr. Mark Richardson for routine dental cleanings, here are some simple things you can start doing (if you aren’t already) to achieve a healthier smile,

Stay Hydrated

It’s important that you are getting enough water every day, and we don’t mean getting your fluid intake from sodas, sugary sports drinks and fruit juices. Avoiding those sugary drinks and sticking to water will greatly reduce your risk of tooth erosion. Fortunately, drinking enough water throughout the day can also rinse away food particles and bacteria that may be stuck on or between your teeth.

Floss Every Day

Yes, you need to be flossing every day in order to make sure that you are removing plaque, bacteria and food from between teeth. If you don’t floss every day, you’re allowing plaque to harden into tartar, which you won’t be able to simply brush away with your toothbrush (only our Kalamazoo, MI, dentist and dental hygienists have the tools for that). Make flossing a priority, and you only have to do it once a day to reap the benefits.

Brush Twice a Day

It’s also important that you are brushing your teeth in the morning and at night, without fail. Brushing your teeth prevents plaque from building up, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. It’s important that you are practicing proper brushing technique and that you are using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, which can promote healthy, cavity-free teeth.

Replace Your Toothbrush Head

When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, if you have an electric toothbrush)? Take a look at your toothbrush. If the bristles look frazzled and worn, then it’s time to replace them. If you don’t, these worn bristles can actually wear down tooth enamel much faster. You should replace your toothbrush head the minute you notice wear (about every 3-4 months). You should also replace your toothbrush head after traveling or an illness.

Limit Coffee and Wine

Dark beverages are major culprits for dental stains. If you notice that your smile looks a little lackluster these days, our dental hygienist will be able to get your smile a little brighter with a simple dental cleaning. Of course, one way to prevent teeth from yellowing over time is by avoiding (or at the very least, limiting) coffee, black tea and red wine.

If it’s been more than six months since you last visited your dentist here in Kalamazoo, MI, then it’s time to schedule your next cleaning. Call Richardson Family Dentistry at (269) 343-6907 to schedule an appointment.
