How Bonding Can Help Your Smile

0530268001562773683.jpgCosmetic dentistry can do wonders for your smile but many people worry that they have to have a serious problem in order to benefit. Here in Centralia, WA, our dentists, Dr. Steven Ash and Dr. Brian Roberts, offer a range of treatment options that can handle everything from minor issues to more serious imperfections.

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is one of the most cost-effective and non-invasive cosmetic treatments available today. This simple technique can help reshape and resize teeth, as well as cover chips, cracks, breaks, spaces between teeth, and discolorations. While bonding won’t be able to make major changes, it can fix minor to moderate cosmetic problems.

How is bonding performed?

Absolutely no preparation is needed in order for your Centralia, WA, cosmetic dentist to perform dental bonding. Anesthesia or numbing gel is not needed, unless we are treating a decayed tooth. For strictly cosmetic purposes, however, bonding is completely non-invasive.

Once we clean and dry the tooth, we will choose the appropriate shade of bonding resin. After we’ve chosen the right shade for your tooth, we will apply a conditioning liquid and then rinse it off. The purpose of the liquid is to roughen the surface so the resin sticks to the tooth.

Following the conditioning liquid's removal, we will apply the resin onto the problematic area(s) of the tooth, covering any imperfections. We then trim and contour the resin to the tooth before hardening it into place using a special light.

After the resin has hardened, we will make any finishing changes to the resin before polishing the tooth. This allows the material to match the sheen of the surrounding teeth. Bonding takes anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour to complete, depending on how many teeth you are treating.
