FAQs about Dentures

The goal of any adult dealing with tooth loss is to find the best (and sometimes fastest) alternative to replacing their missing teeth. The type of treatment and restoration that works best will depend on several factors including overall health and budget. Are you wondering whether you should get dentures from our Centralia, WA, dentists Dr. Steven Ash and Dr. Brian Roberts?

I’m dealing with tooth loss. What do I do?

The first step is to call our office and let us know that you want to talk about your options. Our Centralia, WA, restorative dentists would be happy to sit down with you to discuss your candidacy for getting dentures.

What are the different kinds of dentures?

As you might already know, dentures are an oral prosthetic designed to replace several or all of your teeth. There are two main types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are meant to replace an entire row of teeth (either upper or lower) by resting on top of the gums. Sometimes dental implants are placed in the jawbone to better support and stabilize full dentures.

Partial dentures are used when you still have some healthy natural teeth left. In some cases, the dentures contain attachments or clasps that connect to healthy natural teeth to hold them in place.

Will I be able to eat what I want with dentures?

As with any dental restoration it can take some time to get used to your new teeth. While our goal is to provide our patients with high-quality dental restorations in Centralia, WA, dentures won’t work exactly like real teeth. It can take several weeks to get fully comfortable with wearing them, and the more often you wear them the better.

How long do dentures last?

The longevity of your dentures really depends on you. As long as you are gentle with them, and properly care and clean them your dentures could last many years before needing to be replaced. Sometimes you may need to come into our office to have your dentures relined so they provide a tighter fit. If you notice that your dentures aren’t fitting as well as they used to, then it’s time to come in to have them relined.

You will want to start with softer foods and eat smaller bites. Over time you may be able to incorporate harder or stickier foods. You may also choose to apply denture adhesive to the dentures to help hold them in place while you eat.
