Common Sports Injuries and How We Can Help

Dr. Josephy Yeargain of Yeargain Foot & Ankle in Dallas, TX, offers podiatric treatment for athletes. During an appointment, he will locate your foot problems and recommend some sports injury treatment options—read on to see a few examples.

So, what are some common sports injuries?

  1. Ankle sprain
  2. Groin pull
  3. Hamstring strain
  4. Shin splints

What are the sports injuries treatments from your Dallas podiatrist?

  • Ankle sprains are a result of ligaments tearing or getting stretched too much. Your podiatrist uses an x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scans, and ultrasounds to diagnose the issue. In most cases, the best way to treat ankle sprains is to rest, ice, compress, and elevate the ankle.
  • Groin pull/strain is caused by straining the adductor muscle while kicking with the dominant leg, or sudden turning while running, skating, jumping, falling, or lifting weights. Treatment options include ice, compression, elevation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, massage therapy, heat, stretching, and electrotherapy.
  • Hamstring strain is when a group of muscles along the back of your thigh becomes overloaded. Treatment options, as mentioned with the other two injuries, include icing, compressing your leg, elevate your leg, using anti-inflammatory painkillers, and stretching/strengthening exercises.
  • Shin splints are the result of overusing and overloading leg muscles, tendons, or shin bone while running, doing exercises that have frequent stops and starts, like dancing, intensifying workouts, and increasing training days. People suffering from flat feet should wear supportive shoes, avoid working out on hard surfaces, and wear appropriate shoes. If after icing, resting, and using pain killers doesn't work, you need to speak with your podiatrist if either the swelling in your lower legs worsens or the shins feel red and hot to the touch.
