Reasons You May Need Your Tooth Extracted

Wisdom teeth symptoms

Today, many people just don't have enough room for their wisdom teeth. If the teeth are partially or fully covered by gum tissue or bone, they're considered impacted. Impacted teeth can cause pain and nerve damage and may even affect the alignment of your other teeth. Removing the teeth relieves your symptoms, but doesn't affect your ability to eat.

Tooth decay

Fillings and root canals often offer effective ways to treat and restore teeth damaged by tooth decay. When the decay is extensive and affects a significant portion of your tooth, extraction may be the best choice.

Fractured tooth

A fracture can occur if your tooth broke after you bit into a hard food, or you experienced a blow to your mouth. Root canal treatment, followed by the addition of a crown, may offer an effective to treat the tooth. If the fracture extends into the root or your tooth is severely damaged, it may be necessary to remove it.

Abscesses

An abscess is a bacterial infection that affects your pulp, the collection of nerves, connective tissues and blood vessels in the center of your tooth. When the infection persists despite antibiotic treatment, or the tooth is severely affected by decay, extraction may be recommended. Abscesses are dental emergencies.
