When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

While keeping a natural, full smile is generally the goal of dentists everywhere, there are some cases in which tooth extraction becomes necessary. Here at Westlake Periodontics in Westlake OH, Dr. Scott Sazima offers oral surgery to those in need. Here are 5 signs that you may need a tooth extraction procedure from his office.

1. You have a loose tooth.

Loose teeth will need to be removed if they can't be saved. Periodontal disease, also referred to as gum disease, is a gum infection that can damage your gums and destroy your jawbone. Periodontal disease can cause your teeth to become loose. If gum disease has caused loosening of your teeth, dental extractions may be required.

2. You have a damaged tooth.

If you have a badly decayed tooth, your dental provider may try to fix it with a filling, crown, or other treatment. However, an extraction may be necessary if there is so much damage and decay that repairs aren't possible.

3. Your tooth is infected.

While root canal treatment is often performed when the dental pulp becomes infected, cases of severe infection may necessitate removal altogether.

4. You have crowded teeth.

Crowded teeth can cause wear-and-tear, gum disease, jaw problems, and tooth loss. In some circumstances, dentists must remove a tooth to prepare the patient's mouth for orthodontic treatment.

5. You have impacted teeth.

Third molars (wisdom teeth) become impacted because they don't have enough room to come in or develop normally. Oral surgery becomes necessary when wisdom teeth will inevitably cause pain, infection, or crowd other teeth. Conversely, wisdom teeth that are healthy and come in properly can remain.
