PODIATRIST PROVIDES TIPS ON TOENAIL CARE

Trim toenails regularly with nail clippers, not scissors — your toenails are twice as thick as your fingernails from birth and clippers are stronger. “Cut them straight across, not too short — there should be a bit of nail showing above the toe — and not down at the corners,” says Matt Fitzpatrick, a consultant podiatrist and spokesman for the College of Podiatry (COP).

“Follow the shape of the nail when cutting, keeping the edge away from the end of the soft tissue part of the toe, because if you can see the edge of the nail it can’t be growing in.” If you have difficulty cutting your nails, file them twice a week using an emery board.
