CONSEQUENCES OF DIABETIC FEET
posted: Feb. 05, 2020.
There are many different consequences of having diabetes including: peripheral neuropathy, ulcerations, anhidrosis and decreased healing. Having diabetes increases the risk of foot trauma and injury. It is important for patients to maintain compliancy so that they are more likely to maintain proper blood glucose control with diet. Non-compliant patients are more likely to not follow proper foot hygiene or wear proper footwear indoors and outdoors to prevent trauma to the feet.
Neuropathy makes it difficult for patients to assess the severity of their problems on their own and thus is a huge risk factor for diabetic wounds and infections. Infections can become limb-threatening and also lead to amputations.
