CANNABINOIDS FOR TREATMENT OF CHRONIC PRURITIS
posted: Feb. 16, 2020.
The endogenous cannabinoid system plays a role in nociception and inflammation of the skin, and combats pruritus through neuronal activation, transmission via afferent pathway, and local modulation of keratinocytes and mast cells. Topical and systemic cannabinoids have shown some efficacy when studied in treatment of atopic dermatitis and chronic pruritus, although most of these trials have been open-label or observational.
Use of cannabinoids is increasing among patients in the United States, and dermatologists may be asked by patients about its use in the treatment of skin disease. When it is a legal option, topical cannabinoids may be a possible treatment option in refractory pruritus, although further randomized, controlled trials are needed.
