THE PODIATRISTS ROLE IN ADDRESSING FALL RISK AMONG A GROWING DIABETIC/AGING POPULATION

Falls are a huge concern with the elderly community who are very frail and sometimes suffering from osteoporosis - this could lead to fractures, broken bones and serious health conditions.
Over 30,000 adults aged > 65 die every year as a result of falling. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy can cause altered mobility leading to impaired balance and posture and this usually is progressive. As impairment can help predict future physical disability, it is important for practitioners to notice these signs of impairment to help reduce risk of falls.
Sensory perception loss in the limbs is associated with many conditions, including diabetes. Peripheral neuropathy is the most common cause of sensory perception loss affecting at least 50% of diabetic individuals.
It is thus important for practitioners to assess balance deficits and recommend suggestions to reduce their risk. Podiatric interventions can include: supportive footwear, ankle foot orthoses, physical therapy and other modalities.
