SMART ABI FOR QUICK, ACCURATE, PATIENT-FRIENDLY DIAGNOSIS OF PAD
posted: Oct. 26, 2020.
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is increasing due to asymptomatic spread - it can build up over a lifetime and the symptoms may not be present until arteries have narrowed by 60%. Symptoms include: pulselessness, pain, paraesthesia, cold feet etc. The SMART-ABI allows health professionals to diagnose PAD at its earliest stage and prevent surgery and amputations. PAD screening is recommended for all persons with diabetes aged > 50 years with and without symptoms. Advanced age and diabetes are strong risk factors for PAD and neuropathy.
The SMART-ABI can perform a test within 3-5 minutes that accurately measures a patients ankle-brachial index, blood pressure and BMI. Depending on the outcomes, a vascular surgeon can or cannot be recommended. This allows and prevents surgery by assessing the patient sooner rather than later leading to a reduce in future surgeries, amputations and hospitalizations.
