NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE: OTHER USES FOR BOTOX

Botox, the purified version of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, has become a popular treatment for wrinkles. But did you know that it is also used for a variety of other conditions?

Botox: Anders Derm

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BOTOX

Dr. Vernon Brooks found in 1953 that injecting small amounts of botulinum into a hyperactive muscle caused it to temporarily relax. The FDA first approved Botox in 1989 to treat problems with eye muscles and eyelid spasms. In the 1990s and into the 21st century, the FDA began to approve Botox for even more uses—such as treating neck pain and, most famously, for improving frown lines.

BOTOX TREATS MORE THAN JUST FROWN LINES

Botox became so popular for treating wrinkles, physicians and scientists began to notice other effects. It is now FDA-approved to help relieve migraines and certain types of neck pain. Botox is also approved for adults with overactive bladder, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), or muscle stiffness in the elbow and wrist. Some physicians offer Botox as a treatment for enlarged jaw muscles, vocal cord spasms, and enlarged prostates. Botox is now recognized as a treatment for 21 different conditions in 80 countries!
