Dental Crowns in Warren, MI

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped porcelain caps that go over your teeth to improve the appearance, shape, or strength of a tooth. Dental crowns are recommended for the following dental issues:

  • To offer additional protection and support for a weak or damaged tooth
  • To restore strength back into a broken or weak tooth
  • To cover a severely discolored or misshapen teeth
  • To secure a dental bridge in place
  • To place over a dental implant

Causes of a Weak or Damaged Tooth
There is a myriad of reasons why you may be dealing with a problematic tooth. Severe decay and infection tend to be the number one culprits for why you may need a dental crown. Infection or decay can cause the inner workings of the tooth—also known as the dental pulp—to become inflamed or infected, too. When this happens, our dentist, Dr. Karam will recommend a root canal. After a root canal is performed, we often advise that our patients get a dental crown to provide ample protection for the damaged tooth.

Getting a Dental Crown
Whether you’ve had root canal therapy or not, the first step is to shave down the damaged parts of the tooth and to take impressions. These impressions will then be sent to a lab where they will custom-make your very own dental crown, which is fabricated to look just like a natural tooth.

Your Crown is Always Custom-Made
In the meantime, we will give you a temporary crown to wear. However, the temporary crown is not as strong as a permanent one, so we will give you particular care instructions, so you don’t damage your temporary dental crown. Once your permanent crown is complete, we will remove your temporary one and cement the new one into place.

Caring for Your Dental Crown
One benefit of dental crowns is that they are durable and resilient, so you don’t have to treat them any differently than regular teeth. However, even though they aren’t real, you still need to brush and floss your dental work every day to prevent cavities or gum disease from forming on or around neighboring natural teeth.
