Emergency Dentist Q & A

What does an emergency dentist do?

An emergency dentist treats dental and mouth injuries that need immediate attention. Emergency dental situations usually involve saving knocked-out or broken teeth.

Getting to BMW Dental within half an hour of your mouth or tooth injury gives you the best chance to save your tooth.

Is it time to call an emergency dentist?

It's a good idea to seek immediate emergency dental care whenever you or a family member is suffering from a severe oral injury or other excruciating condition. These types of situations are generally considered dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-out teeth
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Intense tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your tongue, gums, or cheeks
  • An injury to your face or mouth
  • Swelling in your tongue, gums, or mouth
  • A badly fractured or cracked tooth
  • A cut or tear on your lips

If you chip a tooth, but it doesn’t appear as if you may lose the tooth entirely, it may not be a dental emergency. Even so, you can't go wrong by calling an experienced dentist at BMW Dental.

They're trained to handle dental emergencies and can walk you through what to do with your tooth until you can visit the office.

What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is a serious dental emergency. Without immediate dental care, you may be at risk of losing the tooth. In this situation, clean both the injured tooth and inside your mouth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with lukewarm water. Avoid touching or holding the tooth's roots.

Hold the tooth by the crown (the smooth white top part) as you rinse it. If possible, try to place it back into the socket in your gums where it came out.

Close your mouth slowly. Hold the tooth in place with your fingers or gently bite down on it to help it stay in place until you can visit BMW Dental. Call the office right away, or have someone call for you who can explain the situation.

What should you do if you can't put the tooth back in your mouth? The goal is to keep the tooth moist at all times. Put it in a cup of milk or in your mouth next to your cheek to help preserve it until you arrive at the dental office.

Don't let a broken tooth prevent you from enjoying your smile. Call BMW Dental for expert assistance in the event of a dental emergency.
