Balloons or graduated dilators are used by the doctor to stretch out narrowing or strictures that may occur in different organs like the esophagus, duodenum, colon, or bile duct. Sometimes these dilatations need to be repeated because the narrowing recurs.
Some endoscopes have a small balloon that the doctor uses to dilate, or stretch, a narrowed pancreatic or bile duct
.
A temporary stent may be placed for a few months to keep the duct open.
