MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

Hearing Loss: Causes, Evaluation, and Treatment Options for Auditory Impairment

Are you struggling to hear conversations? Do you find yourself constantly asking people to repeat themselves? If so, you're not alone. Hearing loss is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. With the knowledge and support, managing hearing loss becomes much more manageable. At our practice, we devote time to helping you understand your hearing health and providing personalized solutions to improve your quality of life.

Hearing Loss: Causes, Evaluation, and Treatment Options for Auditory Impairment

Hearing loss results from age, genetics, exposure to loud noise, infections, and medical conditions. One of the most common causes of hearing loss is presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, which gradually occurs as we age. This stage of hearing loss often affects both ears and can make it challenging to hear high-pitched sounds or understand conversations in noisy environments.

Other causes of hearing loss include exposure to loud noises, such as concerts, construction sites, or prolonged use of headphones at high volumes. These loud noises can damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear, leading to permanent hearing loss over time. Ear infections, wax buildup, and medical conditions like otosclerosis or Meniere's disease can contribute.

If you're experiencing symptoms of hearing loss, it's essential to undergo a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified audiologist or hearing healthcare professional. During your visit, your audiologist will conduct various tests to assess the severity and type of hearing loss you may have. These tests may include a physical examination of your ears, a hearing screening to measure your ability to hear different frequencies, and speech audiometry to determine how well you understand spoken words. Your audiologist may also recommend additional tests, such as tympanometry to assess the health of your middle ear or otoacoustic emissions testing to evaluate the function of your inner ear.

The most common treatment for hearing loss is hearing aids, small electronic devices worn in or behind the ear that amplify sound and make it easier to listen to conversations and other sounds. Hearing aids come in many styles and technologies to suit your needs and preferences. Some hearing aids can be virtually invisible, while others offer advanced features like Bluetooth connectivity and noise cancellation to enhance your listening experience in different environments.
