How does Invisalign work?

Instead of bonding metal brackets and wires to your teeth in order to shift teeth into place, Invisalign uses a set of custom clear aligners that fit over your teeth just like a nightguard or whitening tray. The difference is that the aligners apply pressure to just the right areas of your smile in order to gradually move teeth into the ideal alignment.

Before your Invisalign aligners are even created, our Pittsburgh, PA, dentist will need to take digital impressions of your mouth. Using special computer software, these impressions of your teeth are turned into 3D images where we can map out every tooth movement that needs to happen to achieve your dream smile. This information is then sent to an Invisalign-approved dental lab that will create your very own set of aligners based on our mapped-out treatment plan.

What should I expect with Invisalign treatment?

When you come into our office to get your Invisalign aligners, we will fit you with the first set and then provide you with the rest. Aligners are worn for about two weeks before they are replaced with the next set in your treatment plan. The number of aligners you’ll need to wear over the course of your treatment will depend on the severity of the bite. The average length of treatment is about one year.

In order to see results, you’ll need to wear your aligners the majority of the day (usually around 20 to 22 hours each day; it’s a good idea to aim for 22 hours). Aligners should be worn unless you are eating, drinking, brushing or flossing.
