Learning More About Implant Services

The physicians at the Environmental Health Center – Dallas during the past 25 years have seen and treated a large number of implant patients, primarily those with vascular abdominal and orthopedic prostheses and women with breast implants. We recognize that many chronic debilitating symptoms, as well as some illnesses, may be related to implant materials. The patients they have seen fall into two categories:

  • the larger group has been able to regain their health with the implants left in place
  • the second group has had to have the implants and their inflammatory fibrous tissue capsules removed.

Both groups had to be tested for sensitivities to implant components, molds, pollens, dust, danders, foods and chemicals. In general, the group that did not have their implants removed had to manage a much stricter treatment regime than the group that had their implants removed.

In addition to many synthetic implants, such as abdominal mesh, vascular grafts, heart valves, jaws, hip joints and other insertion products, breast implants have proven to cause various health problems including chemical sensitivity. Animal and human studies of artificial organs as long as 30 years ago showed tissue reaction causing localized scaring and the triggering of blood clotting mechanisms. EHC-D implant research studies over the last 25 years have identified many patients who have had complications due to a variety of artificial implants including eye lens implants.

Implant Syndrome

Artificial breast implants filled with silicone, saline or made with other forms of plastic have now been performed on one to two million women in the U.S. Reports of problems relating to the implants have ranged from mild to life-threatening, including anaphylaxis. Due to the leaching of silicone, urethane, and other products. A number of these women have developed various degrees of chemical sensitivity. Some have muscle, fascial, and joint pains. Others have anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, muscle spasms, spasms of the vessels in the hands and feet, cold sensitivity and swelling of extremities. In addition, many have become food and water intolerant.

Other areas of implants include:

  • abdominal including mesh implants for hernia repair
  • jaw
  • eye
  • orthopedic
  • cardiovascular
  • genitourinary

Diagnosis and Treatment

The diagnostic process may include lab tests, such as blood immune and xenobiotic (chemical) levels, skin testing for sensitivities to implant components, pollens, molds, dust, danders, foods and chemicals, other challenge tests (oral and inhaled), SPECT brain scans, autonomic nervous system and balance testing as well as various other objective tests. Treatment may include avoidance of pollutants in air, food and water, immunotherapy, specialized diet, nutritional replacement, toxin depuration and physical therapy. The toxin depuration program, which combines heat-induced depuration in specially designed saunas, exercise and massage, is an excellent outpatient means of treating toxic exposures.

Surgical Care

Surgical aspects, such as anesthetics and intravenous nutrient solutions, are specifically selected to meet the needs of the chemically sensitive patient. Extensive EHC-D physician experience with implant patients as well as their diligent commitment to help have made possible a thorough and effective treatment program for people with implant problems.
