A Pediatrician’s Visit to Haiti: Helping the Needy

Greetings from Valle Verde Pediatrics! Loving and caring for children and families is at the core of what we do at VVP. I have had the opportunity to go to Haiti, once in '08, and once in 2010, after the devastating earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince and killed over 300,000 people. I went with an organization called Haiti Endowment Fund, based in Temecula, CA. HEF has served the Haitian people in the rural area of Hinche, about 3 hours northeast of Port-au-Prince, for the last 25 years. Through this service, schools, churches, agricultural and fishery programs have been started and the Haitian people have a hope and a future. I served in the medical clinics seeing all kinds of conditions including cholera, malnutrition, burns, orthopedic problems, malaria and everyday pediatric illnesses such as gastroenteritis, asthma, and skin conditions and more. I had the pleasure of serving the children's adults too. These experiences made me more aware of the circumstances that we are facing around the world and enlarged my heart to care and love children and families even more. These experiences give me a balanced perspective as my staff and I take care of you in the best possible way.
