Epilepsy Specialist

Epilepsy Specialist in San Jose, CA

Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder that causes seizures. If you’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy, or if you are dealing with seizures, you must know where to turn for care. While a general doctor may be the first person you talked to about your symptoms they won’t have the specialized training and expertise to be able to treat your epilepsy. This is where our neurologists Dr. Raj Gupta and Dr. Akshay Shah can help.

What is epilepsy?

When you turn to the team at San Jose Pacific Neurology Center, you can trust that you will find neurological experts that are focused on providing you with the very highest and individualized care you can get. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder, so we work with a lot of individuals to help them find the right treatment options to manage their epilepsy and lead happy, healthier lives.

When you come into our practice for your evaluation, we will ask you questions about your seizures. We want to understand how seizures are impacting your daily routine and what you are experiencing so that we can create an effective treatment plan that helps you get your seizures under control.

Getting an Epilepsy Diagnosis and Treatment

If you aren’t sure whether you have epilepsy then you may first turn to your regular doctor for answers. Perhaps they’ve referred you to us. We can easily confirm your diagnosis of epilepsy by simply performing a brain test known as an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures brain waves. This is the standard way to diagnose epilepsy and it’s completely painless and non-invasive; however, additional tests may be required to determine the cause of your epilepsy.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to treating epilepsy, so you will need to work closely with us to determine what is and isn’t working for you. There are several antiseizure medications on the market, and we know that not everyone’s brain responds the same way to medications. We will continue to monitor your symptoms to ensure that the medication we’ve prescribed is providing you with relief. If not, we may need to adjust the dose or change medications.

In some cases, epilepsy may be treated with surgery. While surgery was once considered the last resort when it came to treating epilepsy, there have been several advancements in technology and techniques that can offer some of our epilepsy patients more effective and long-lasting relief from their epilepsy symptoms, particularly when medications alone aren’t enough.
