Heel pain in children is more common than one might think and is never normal. The most common cause is a condition called "Severs Disease" or Calcaneal Appophysitis". This is not actually a disease but is an inflammation of the growth center at the back of the heel. This condition is usually seen in children between the ages of 8 and 14, especially active children involved in sports. A proper evaluation including the child's foot type and function along with x-rays will be needed to diagnose the problem. Our customized treatment plan which may include anti-inflammatory medication, stretching and custom orthotics(shoe inserts) usually resolves this condition.
