- What is spinal decompression?
Spinal decompression therapy is a technique used by health professionals to treat serious back and neck pain conditions. It is utilized primarily for treating disc herniations or disc bulge, sciatica, degenerative joint disease (DJD), and facet joint syndrome. It also shows promise in treating certain forms of spinal stenosis. If you have been diagnosed with one or more of these conditions please contact Dr. Kollias at Sheldon Road Chiropractic in Tampa and arrange a free consultation to see if you are a candidate for this treatment.
- How does spinal decompression work?
All of the conditions mentioned above have one thing in common; they all
result in a decrease in the spaces that exist between the bones on the
spine. This is important because these spaces, which are called
“intervertebral foramen”, are the “holes” that our spinal nerves go through
to communicate with almost every single part of our bodies. If these holes
become “smaller” due to disc herniation, disc bulge, degenerative joint
disease, spinal stenosis or facet joint syndrome then the nerves that
control our arms, legs or organs can become “pinched” resulting in
tremendous pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling. Spinal decompression
works by stretching these pinched spinal joints and relieving the pressure
on spinal nerves. At
Sheldon Road Chiropractic
we have been accomplishing this by using the DRX9000 spinal decompression
device.
- What is the DRX9000?
The DRX9000 spinal decompression device is a state of the art
machine that gently and efficiently stretches pinched or compressed spinal
joints, decreasing pressure on the spinal discs and relieving pressure on
spinal nerves that have been pinched and are causing pain. In addition, this
stretching allows for the increased flow of oxygen, fluid and nutrients to
spinal discs with the intent of increasing the overall function and
flexibility and of the joint.

- Does insurance cover this therapy?
Well, the answer to that question is yes and no.
Some insurers do cover spinal decompression with pre-approval. These include auto injury insurance (also known as personal injury protection or PIP), workers compensation, and certain health insurance group plans. Also, although many insurance carriers do not cover spinal decompression therapy itself they do cover the other components of the treatment including, x-rays , exams, electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, manual therapy techniques, etc…
