What to expect

Being well-prepared for your appointment will ensure that the doctor has all of the needed information to provide the best possible care for you. It also will help relieve any unnecessary anxiety you may be feeling.  A complete new patient exam with dilation of your eyes can take up to 2 hours in the office.  Exams without dilation typically are less than one hour.  We know your time is valuable and we will do our best to minimize waiting.  Emergencies or unforeseen circumstances can sometimes make the office visit longer.   Educate yourself on your symptoms by reviewing the content on this Web site. Also, take some time to review our staff page and familiarize yourself with the doctors. We look forward to your first visit.

Refraction explained

A common question in our office is "what is a refraction and why do I have to pay for it?".  First, a refraction is a careful measurement for your eyeglasses prescription using both an autorefractor and an instrument called a phoropter.  During this test you will be asked to look through the phoropter at the distant eye chart and asked, "which is more clear, one or two?" as the technician adjusts the phoropter setting.  When the best possible vision is reached the refraction is complete and the phoropter will give us the measurements for an your eyeglasses prescription.  You cannot recieve a new pair of glasses without a current refraction .  Some insurances will pay for your refraction, but many like Medicare will not.  This fee is collected at the end of your appointment in addition to any co-payment your insurance plan requires.  Should your insurance plan pay us for your refraction, you will be reimbursed accordingly.
