About Arrhythmia

How your cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist in Houston, TX, can help if you have arrhythmia.

If you have ever experienced a rapid or slow, irregular heartbeat, it can be a scary experience. When your heartbeat is slow, rapid, or irregular, you have arrhythmia, which is an abnormal heart rhythm. Your cardiologist can help you feel better.

Dr. Alireza Nazeri at Mobitz Heart & Rhythm Center in Houston, TX, is a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist who offers a wide range of cardiology services, including treatment of arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia is caused by abnormal function of your heart’s electrical system. There are several different types of arrhythmia including:

  • Bradycardia, when your heart beats too slow, usually slower than 60 beats per minute
  • Tachycardia, when your heart beats too fast, usually more than 100 beats per minute
  • Atrial fibrillation, commonly known as AFib, when you have a fast, irregular heartbeat which causes your heart to quiver

Other types of arrhythmia include Asystole, AV node disease, sinus node disease, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and others. To learn more about the types of arrhythmia, click here:

So, how do you know if you have arrhythmia? The condition is diagnosed using an electrocardiogram, which measures your heart’s electrical impulses. You may also notice signs and symptoms like these:

  • Feeling dizzy and lightheaded
  • Being short of breath
  • Having heart palpitations or skipped beats
  • Experiencing numbness and chest pain
  • Feeling faint or fatigued

Your cardiologist will use an electrocardiogram, heart monitor, and other methods to diagnose an arrhythmia. If you do have arrhythmia, your cardiologist may recommend:

  • Medications designed to regulate your heart rhythm
  • Implanting a pacemaker which will generate cardiac electrical impulses
  • Implanting a defibrillator which will shock your heart to restore correct heart rhythm
  • Cardioversion using medications or electrical current to restore normal sinus rhythm
  • Catheter ablation to destroy abnormal tissue causing the arrhythmia
