What is a bunion?

A bunion is a very common foot deformity that causes the joint at the base of the big toes to stick out. A bunion ranges from mild to severe and can continue to progress and get worse if you aren’t careful. Over time you’ll also notice that the big toe leans inward towards the other toes and can even cross over the toes, causing the joint to jut out even further.

What causes bunions to form?

In most cases, bunions are inherited. This means that if a sibling or parent has bunions that you are also more likely to develop one. Sometimes a foot injury or structural abnormality is to blame. Of course, it isn’t always possible to tell what’s causing a bunion; however, the root cause isn’t important to managing the condition and preventing it from becoming worse.

While experts are still on the fence about whether or not tight shoes or high heels can also cause bunions, it’s important to avoid these kinds of shoes as they can certainly make bunions worse.

Is there a way to prevent bunions in Dublin and Columbus?

Since some people are just born with a certain foot structure that can predispose them to bunions, this is something you can’t change; however, you can change the kind of shoes you wear. As a general rule, you should avoid shoes that are too tight, put pressure on the base of the big toe joint or have heels over 2 inches tall. Also, make sure to wear shoes that provide a roomy toe box (toes should be able to freely wiggle and move without being bunched up).
