Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

Preparing for Your Colonoscopy

If you have an appointment with your gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy to check for early signs of colon cancer, there is no need to feel apprehensive about the preparation. Although you might feel it’s a little inconvenient, it’s well worth the effort and could end up saving your life. Dr. Prasad Penmetsa, Dr. Surinder Devgun, and Dr. Ari Chodos are gastroenterologists at Rochester Gastroenterology Associates in Rochester NY. They can help you prepare for your colonoscopy.

How Your Prepare for a Colonoscopy

The most important part of prepping for a colonoscopy is to empty the colon. If your bowel preparation isn’t completed properly, your Rochester gastroenterologist may miss polyps and lesions and the whole process may need to be repeated. There are several stages of colonoscopy preparation. These include:

  • Diet preparation: Three days before your colonoscopy is due, eliminate high fiber foods such as seeds, grains, nuts, and raw fruits and vegetables from your diet. The day before your procedure, avoid solid foods. Your dietary intake should be limited to the broth, clear juice, and tea or coffee. This should continue on the day of your colonoscopy, but you should stop eating and drinking completely for two hours before your procedure.
  • Bowel preparation: On the morning of your procedure, you will be required to drink a liquid that will evacuate your bowel completely. Our doctor will provide you with liquid and full instructions.

Make sure that you get everything your need for your colonoscopy preparation, including all the necessary instruction ahead of time and read them thoroughly. If you have any questions call your Rochester Gastroenterologist as soon as possible.
