Pediatric Foot Care

Dr. Stanford, DPM, is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine who specializes in the pediatric foot and ankle. He is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics and attends their conference annually to stay on the cutting edge of pediatric foot and ankle medicine and treatment. Dr. Stanford, DPM, is also an orthotics specialist with special interest in the treatment of pediatric foot and ankle conditions with a variety of custom orthotics.

The pediatric or child’s foot undergoes several changes during different stages of growth and development. We may encounter unusual conditions of the pediatric foot, gait, or lower extremity which are in fact to be expected at that stage of development. Other conditions are cause for concern and may require early intervention to resolve. Our podiatrist, Dr. Stanford, DPM, is very proactive in his approach to children’s foot conditions initiating treatment as soon as possible to assist with resolution of problems rather than waiting to see if the problem is outgrown. Other less concerning issues he will monitor regularly with parents to monitor progress and determine if intervention is warranted down the road.

Children get one chance to develop their foot type and skeleton, and it is our mission to help the child’s foot develop normally and eliminate any negative impact on skeletal development from the foot’s alignment.

Some of the causes for concern would include:

  • Severe flatfoot (often accompanied by out-toeing)
  • In-toeing
  • Toe-walking
  • Juvenile HAV or bunions
  • Severe knock knee (genu valgum) or bow leggedness (genu varum)
  • Clubfoot
  • Heel pain or Calcaneal Apophysitis
  • Hip, knee, or lower back pain
  • Balance or coordination problems
  • Clawed or hammered toes
  • Ingrowing toenails
  • Fungal or dystrophic (thickened and discolored) toenails
  • And many more!

If your child or children are experiencing any of these problems, or you are concerned as a parent about the health of your children’s feet, we strongly encourage a consultation with Dr. Stanford, DPM.
