Eczema

Eczema and atopic dermatitis are terms often used interchangeably. In actuality, eczema is a much more general term that includes such diseases as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis.
So much of adequately treating eczema depends on what the patient does in daily life. Avoid fragrant products, use hypoallergenic cleansers and detergents, avoid very hot water and very long baths/showers, keep fingernails short and do as much as possible to avoid scratching.
This last piece of advice takes a lot of will power, but if you realize that every scratch leads to more itch, you would be more motivated to grab that anti-itch lotion or even ice to relieve the itch rather than scratching or rubbing the skin.
