Whitening procedures have effectively restored the smiles of people with stained, yellowed and discolored teeth.

The darker tissue of your teeth, called dentin, can become exposed or more visible as the outer layer of enamel is worn away by the effects of aging, toothbrush abrasion, or things like coffee, tea and tobacco.

Some stains are caused by external factors like foods and smoking.  Food sediments are absorbed by the teeth's outer film layer.  Products with a sediment like coffee and tea, and smoking are notorious for staining teeth.  Over time, teeth become discolored as sediments are absorbed on the teeth's surfaces.  These stains can be removed professionally by your dentist.  This procedure is call a prophylaxis or dental cleaning.

Some stains are caused by traumatic injuries, medications, and fluorosis.  These stains actually begin inside the teeth.  Brushing and flossing do not remove these types of stains.

More and more people are choosing teeth whitening procedures to reverse the effects of aging, abrasion and abuse from food and tobacco.

Some commercially available "whitening toothpastes" can be somewhat effective at removing superficial stains, but they do not really change the whiteness of your teeth.  Many of these products are very abrasive and they will gradually wear away the teeth's enamel.  Over the long run, your teeth will actually appear darker as the enamel layer gets thinner and more of the underlying darker dentin begins to show through.

Whitening agents actually change the color of your teeth, making them whiter.  They are more effective on certain types of discoloration, such as yellowed teeth, which whiten very good.  Grey discolorations, mottled or pitted stains, and partially stained teeth do not whiten as well.  These defects are best treated by covering them with porcelain Lumineers or crowns.

It is important not to over-whiten teeth.  Teeth will obtain their maximum whiteness with only two or three applications.  Over-whitening will cause teeth to permanently appear glassy and crystally.

Professional whitening is considered to be the most effective and safest method.  Professional tooth whitening can last many years.

At Family Dentistry & Orthodontic, Dr. Juba will prescribe a professional-strength teeth whitening product that you use at your convenience in the privacy of your home.  The disposable trays are prepackaged and ready for use.  Simply open the package and wear the prefilled tray for 30 to 60 minutes; then dispose.
