Wrinkle Treatment

What Causes Wrinkles?

As you age, your skin loses vital moisture, elasticity, and collagen, the key components of younger-looking skin. That means when you laugh, squint, frown, or show other expressions, your skin doesn’t “snap back” the way it did when you were younger. Instead, fine lines and wrinkles begin to form around the lines of expression. Sun exposure, poor diet, and other factors can make the problem worse.

Types of Wrinkles

There are several types of wrinkles, from fine lines to deep creases. The most common types are:

  • Crow’s feet, which are the lines radiating out from the corners of your eyes
  • Glabella, which are the deep creases between your eyebrows
  • Furrows, which are the wrinkles running across your forehead
  • Marionette lines, which are the vertical lines running from your mouth to your chin

Treatments for Fine Lines and Smaller Wrinkles

Your dermatologist offers several treatment options to minimize the appearance of fine lines and smaller wrinkles, including:

  • Vitamin and antioxidant creams to minimize the appearance of wrinkles
  • Lotions with vitamin A acid to enhance skin tone and reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  • Alpha-hydroxy acid creams to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Treatments for Deeper Wrinkles and Creases

Your dermatologist can also help minimize the appearance of deeper wrinkles and creases, and may recommend:

  • Chemical peels, resurface your skin, revealing younger-looking skin
  • Dermal fillers, like Restylane, fill in wrinkles and fine lines, plumping and smoothing your skin
  • Wrinkle relaxers like Dysport or Jeuveau, which temporarily freeze the muscles and nerves at the injection site, minimizing wrinkles and creases
