Common Causes of Infertility

When you're trying to conceive and can't, it's heartbreaking. It's easy to get frustrated and give up hope. However, know the common causes and how our acupuncturists, either Dr. Jialei Tang or Dr. Park, at Apex Acupuncture & Chiropractic, serving the midtown & downtown/ financial district of New York, NY, can help.

Ovulation Disorders

Normally, one egg is released from an ovary each month during a process known as ovulation. For some women, though, this doesn't happen each month or even at all. It could stem from an issue such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or a hormonal imbalance, among other reasons.

Age

Age is a common cause of infertility in females. The number of eggs a woman has reduces quickly as she ages. The quality of her eggs decreases as well, which can result in miscarriages that happen before a woman's missed cycle due to chromosomal abnormalities.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the uterine tissue doesn't grow inside the uterus as it should. It can then interfere with a woman's ability to get pregnant.

Stress

Stress can interfere with either partner's fertility. Sometimes, the stress is actually due to not being able to get pregnant. It then hinders the woman's ability to conceive, furthering the stress. In males, stress can reduce the number and health of the sperm.

Health Conditions

Some health conditions not related to the reproductive system can lead to infertility. For instance, one question we'll ask you at one of our New York, NY, offices in the midtown & downtown/ financial district, is if you have diabetes. Specifically, if you're overweight and diabetic, it can interfere with fertility. The blood sugar spikes also have an impact.

Men with multiple sclerosis may struggle to conceive with their partner. While the disease is known for causing nerve damage, it's also known for triggering low testosterone levels in males. This hormone is necessary for the production of healthy sperm.

Obesity can affect conception as well since it can contribute to abnormal hormone levels.

And these are merely some examples of conditions that impact fertility.

Environmental and Lifestyle Factors

Exposure to certain substances from your lifestyle or environment can make conceiving difficult. Your lifestyle, in general, can impact the process, such as if you live a sedentary one.
