Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding in Fountain Valley, CA

How Can I Stop Abnormal Uterine Bleeding?

What is abnormal uterine bleeding, exactly? Abnormal uterine bleeding refers to any bleeding that falls outside your normal menstrual cycle, as well as persistent bleeding or very heavy periods. This problem is actually rather common in women of all ages and has different causes. The most common reasons for abnormal uterine bleeding include,

  • Pregnancy
  • Ovarian polyps and fibroids
  • Hormonal changes or imbalances (more common in teens and menopausal women)
  • Birth control pills or intrauterine devices
  • Hormone replacement therapy

In rare cases, infection or cancer of the cervix, uterus, or genital tract can also cause abnormal uterine bleeding. The case will also most likely depend on your age. For example, teens may experience abnormal bleeding as a result of the anovulatory bleeding while women in their 40s and 50s may develop abnormal bleeding as a result of hormonal changes.

If you are experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding, it’s important that you seek medical attention. Our board-certified OBGYN Dr. Debora Sedaghat and her team have worked with many women to determine the root cause of their bleeding and how to treat or manage their symptoms. In order to figure out the best treatment plan for you, we will first need to determine the cause.

Pregnancy

If there is a possibility that you could be pregnant, we will first take a pregnancy test during your visit. Blood tests may also be required to check for additional complications such as iron deficiency anemia, which can occur in women who experience prolonged or heavy bleeding.

Hormones

If hormones are to blame, there are several things our gynecologist may recommend. Maintaining a healthy weight and losing excess weight can improve hormone imbalances naturally to reduce the risk of abnormal bleeding. Furthermore, there are a variety of treatment options that can improve abnormal uterine bleeding such as,

Birth control pills: This can actually help regulate hormones and improve these symptoms.

Intrauterine device (IUD): This small device is inserted into the uterus, where it slowly releases hormones to prevent pregnancy. Along with being an effective form of birth control, an IUD can also reduce abnormal bleeding episodes.

Endometrial ablation: This procedure is most often performed in patients who are in their 40’s and 50’s women who still experience severe and prolonged uterine bleeding. This procedure removes a very thin layer of endometrial tissue to stop bleeding. It can also treat women who are experiencing very heavy menstrual cycles if they aren’t planning to get pregnant.
