Types Of Dentures

Are you considering dentures but aren't sure which type is the best choice for you? Drs. Karen Lawitts, your Syracuse, denturesNY, dentists, share some information that will help you make a decision.

Full dentures

Full dentures are often recommended if you need to replace both your upper and lower teeth. These dentures rest against your gums and the roof of your mouth and improve your ability to chew, bite and speak normally. Since your mouth continues to change after your remaining teeth are extracted, your dentures will probably need to be adjusted or relined occasionally to ensure a good fit.

Immediate dentures

When you choose immediate dentures, you won't need to wait for your mouth to heal before you receive your new teeth. Immediate dentures are placed in your mouth as soon as your teeth are removed. The fit of the dentures must be adjusted after three or four months, due to the normal changes that occur in your gums and mouth after tooth extraction.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are used when you've lost multiple teeth but don't need a full denture. They feature small hooks that attach to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Overdentures

Overdentures fit over tooth fragments. In some cases, teeth break but the roots remain in good condition. When the fragments are left in place, they reduce jawbone shrinkage that occurs after tooth loss and provide a strong base for your dentures.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are attached to dental implants and offer a more comfortable fit than traditional dentures. Both removable and permanent implant-supported dentures are available. Dental implants look like small screws and are used to replace tooth roots. They're placed in an opening in your jaw and soon bond to the surrounding bone. Once bonding occurs, dentures are attached to the screws. In most cases, you only need two to four implants to support an upper or lower denture.
