Understanding Developmental Delay: How to Support Your Child’s Growth In Oak Park, IL

At Pedios Pediatrics in Oak Park, IL, Dr. Donna L. Wegner, Dr. Rebecca Turk, Dr. Laura Rogers, and Dr. Heather Haukness are committed to helping families navigate the complexities of developmental delay. Every child grows and learns at their own pace, but when milestones are consistently missed, it may indicate a developmental delay. At Pedios Pediatrics, we work closely with families to identify concerns early and provide the resources and care needed to support your child’s development.

What Is Developmental Delay?

Developmental delay refers to when a child does not reach expected milestones in areas such as speech, motor skills, social interactions, or cognitive abilities. These delays can vary widely in severity and may affect one or multiple areas of development.

For example, a child with a speech delay may have difficulty forming words or sentences, while a motor delay might make it challenging to crawl, walk, or grasp objects. Identifying these delays early is crucial for providing the right interventions and helping your child reach their full potential.

How Pedios Pediatrics Supports Families

At Pedios Pediatrics, we take a proactive approach to developmental concerns. During regular checkups, we monitor your child’s progress and discuss any observations or concerns you may have. If a developmental delay is suspected, we may recommend further evaluations or screenings to better understand your child’s needs. We believe in creating a supportive environment where parents feel empowered to advocate for their child’s growth and success.

Why Early Intervention Matters

The earlier a developmental delay is identified, the more opportunities there are to address it effectively. Early intervention can make a significant difference in helping children build the skills they need to thrive in school, at home, and in social settings. Our team works collaboratively with families to connect them with resources such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or early intervention programs.
