What is Cosmetic Dentistry/Dental Bonding?

Do you know the tooth-colored resin used for dental filling? Even if you haven’t gotten a tooth filled, you probably already know a bit about it. This same resin used to fill a tooth is also used to cover over small dental imperfections that affect the look rather than function of your smile. This resin is moldable, so once it is applied over the tooth Dr. Zimmerman can then shape it to give you the ideal look and to mask defects.

What problems can dental bonding handle?

Dental bonding is completely non-invasive, so the issues it can handle must be rather minimal. Bonding is used for cosmetic purposes to improve the overall look of teeth that are chipped, cracked or discolored but won’t fix issues that actually affect how the tooth functions. Dental bonding may also fill small gaps between teeth or change the shape or length of a tooth.

How do I get dental bonding?

Your first visit to our dental office will be with one of our hygienist to assess your dental health.  We examine your teeth and gums, take any necessary x-rays and talk to you about your treatment goals. After all, we want to make sure that you have the optimal oral health so the dental bonding will be able to give you the results you want.

Once we have determined that you are a good candidate for bonding, we will choose the color of the resin that most closely matches the rest of your tooth. Then we will slightly roughen the surface of the tooth before applying a conditioning liquid that will help the resin stick to the tooth. The entire bonding procedure is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get a new and improved smile without the use of anesthesia or needles.

Once the resin is applied, we will shape it to hide your dental problems. The last step is to then harden the bonding resin with a dental laser. Dental bonding can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour per tooth.
