Acne and Your Child

Acne and Your Child

Acne has been the curse of being a teenager for much of history. This single condition causes more anxiety than almost any other skin disorder faced by teenagers.

These days acne beginning to appear not only in teenagers but in pre-teens as well. Boys and girls are commonly being seen by doctors for acne as early as 7 or 12 years of age. A recent study found that 3 out of 4 girls aged 9 and 10 had pimples. The recent increase in cases of acne in pre-adolescents is partly due to children entering puberty much earlier than ever before. Some doctors believe the increase in cases is partly due to parents seeking treatment for their children at the first sign of acne. Whatever you believe, the age of children receiving treatment for the acne is getting younger.

Good News for Children With Acne

Fortunately, there have been a number of products created that can be purchased over the counter. These include creams, lotions, and cleansers, which are very effective for the majority of cases. Having these types of medications available without a prescription makes it easier to take action. Speeding up the healing of acne eases the anxiety experienced by your child.

Severe Cases Need Medical Attention

If a mild case of acne in a child does not clear up after the use of over the counter medicated products, you will need to visit your pediatrician. A severe case of acne can be controlled, but a stronger treatment method is sometimes required. This includes the possible use of antibiotics or prescription strength creams like Retin-A.

Talking With Your Pediatrician to Make a Plan

Getting a doctor’s advice helps to make a sound decision before you begin treating your child’s acne. The doctor will be able to work with you on a treatment plan that works for you and your child. Being effective is often as simple as being consistent when it comes to skin care.
