What is spinal decompression?
This therapeutic technique employed by requires us to slowly and carefully stretch the spine, by using either a table or device to help reduce pain and discomfort in the legs and back. This procedure is nonsurgical and draws upon similar principles used in spinal traction, which is designed to reduce pain and promote more effective healing.
What should I expect?
During spinal decompression, patients will lie on a motorized table (the patient remains fully clothed during this treatment). The lower half of the table is designed to be able to move while the top portion stays fixed. Then a harness is placed around your hips and another at your feet. As your decompression therapy starts, the upper portion will remain in a fixed state, while the lower portions, which are harnessed, will move back and forth to stretch and elongate the spine.
Is spinal decompression painful?
No one should feel pain at any time during or after spinal decompression. The only thing you may feel is the stretch in your spine after treatment.
How long does spinal decompression take? How many sessions do I need?
Each session takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, and all sessions are conducted in our Edmonton, AB chiropractic office. Typically decompression therapy consists of anywhere from 15 to 30 treatments, but this will vary depending on the severity of your condition.
Who can spinal decompression help?
Spinal decompression is recommended for those with lower back pain, leg pain (sciatica) and neck pain due to bulging, degenerated or herniated discs.
Who should not get spinal decompression in Edmonton, AB?
While spinal decompression can be beneficial it isn’t right for everyone. Patients with broken vertebrae, those who’ve had a spinal fusion or an artificial disc, or those who’ve had unsuccessful back surgeries are not right for this treatment. Pregnant women, as well as those with spinal stenosis, spinal infections or a tumor should also avoid spinal decompression.
