Non-Surgical Periodontal Care

Non-surgical gum treatment

Periodontists are experts in non-surgical periodontal care!

We have patients in our practice who have been maintained for over 40 years without periodontal surgery. The keystone of non-surgical therapy is scaling and root planing, a procedure to remove bacterial deposits, which are growing on the root of the tooth, below the gum line. This procedure is often done without injections, using a gel which numbs the gums. A combination of piezoelectric and hand instruments is used for the procedure. There are no restrictions after this procedure, and minimal discomfort. Other non surgical treatments include, systemic and site specific antibiotic therapy, antimicrobial rinses, and a medication which slows down the rate of progression of periodontal disease. Lasers may also be used for pocket disinfection. The Nd:YAG laser is 16 times more effective than a diode laser in killing the black pigmented bacteria associated with periodontal disease.
