Bone Grafting

With pocket reduction therapies, bone grafts are often placed in defects that can possibly be regenerated. Guided tissue bone regeneration “regenerates” the previously lost gum and bone tissue. Dr. Kapoor may recommend a bone graft procedure if the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed. These procedures can reverse some of the damage by regenerating lost bone and tissue. During this procedure, Dr. Kapoor folds back the gum tissue and removes the disease-causing bacteria. Membranes, bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins can be used to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue.

There are many options to strengthen your teeth and to restore your bone to a healthy level. Dr. Kapoor will discuss the best options for you.

What Are the Benefits of This Procedure?
Eliminating existing bacteria and regenerating bone and tissue helps to reduce pocket depth and repair damage caused by periodontal disease. With a combination of at-home oral care and professional cleanings, you will increase the chances of keeping your natural teeth – and decrease the chances of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease.

Ridge Augmentation?
When a tooth is lost due to trauma or periodontal disease, the underlying bone that supported that tooth can decrease in size. This creates a gap that can make smiles look unaesthetic and prevent placement of dental implants. Certain sites may need to be grafted prior to placing an implant or bridge to allow stability of the dental implants for long term success. Dr. Kapoor can fill in this “defect” with a procedure called ridge augmentation, recapturing the natural contour of your gums and jaw. This procedure involves adding bone growth materials in the defect area and covering the site for healing. After sufficient healing is completed, a new tooth can then be created that is beautiful, easy-to-clean and natural looking.
